Pointed to me by bobdog is the announcement by Ubisoft that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is currently in production in the offices of Ubisoft in Montpellier (France). Of course, every people having played the first game that was released 5 years ago already know what Beyond Good & Evil is about, and for those who don't, we have a review of the game by Doc_Brown available.

Beyond Good & Evil
was one of those games that received good marks from most reviewers and that however did not really succeed on the commercial side of things up to the point that Ubisoft delayed a possible continuation and finally seemed to have completely dropped the idea. So it was a bit of a surprise when the second opus in what is about to become a franchise was officially announced at the end of a conference 2 days ago. However, Michel Ancel who designed the first Beyond Good & Evil already stated on May 15th during the UbiDays that the game had already been in "pre-production" for the past year also saying that however Ubisoft didn't give any agreement to that. So now it's kind of administrative paperwork as the thing is being made official starting with a first video.

Little is known about Beyond Good & Evil 2, as Ubisoft folks weren't too keen to fully comment the first video that is published below (main news). At least we know that Pey'j (the pig) and the lovely Jade will be back. For the rest, it's left in the dark until further info is unveiled. Ubisoft has been so scarce about info that neither the release period nor the supported platforms are known. In any case, the title apparently shouldn't be expected before 2009.

Despite the little info available, the coming of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still indeed a good news for those who were fans of the first game.

While I am ecstatic about the possibility of a BGE2, the realistic graphics are a bit worrying. If I recall, the original was bashed somewhat for its "cartoony" graphics, but I felt it fit into the whole gameplay situation, with all the mini-games, weird creatures that you had to photograph, fights, etc. Unless they are headed a whole other direction from the original -- i.e. a 3rd-person RPG perhaps? -- I think realistic graphics would take away from the whole concept.

So, exciting news, but worth watching to see what they do with it. The video indicates (via the text "1. The Pig") that there will be more videos to follow.

This in-game video was just leaked of BGE2. It smacks heavily of Mirrors Edge and Assassins Creed. Ubisoft are really into the crowd navigation in all their recent games, including this one, it seems.

Dunno. Judging by the look of it (especially the end sequence and the obvious lack of any HUD feature) I'd say that it seems like a cutscene rather than an actual in-game footage (possibly coming from a second trailer?). But yeah, the resemblance with Assassin's Creed action is uncanny. Let's hope that they didn't just take the AC engine and gameplay just changing the story and characters...
