Title: When In Ravenholm
Post by: Fanghawk on October 06, 2008, 06:30:12 PM
EDIT -- Issues One and Two of When In Ravenholm have been collected in PDF for your convienience. You might prefer reading those versions, since they have bonus strips and extra content from members of the Foxhole Community. Links below:

When In Ravenholm Issue One (http://machinima.starfoxweb.com/wir/WhenInRavenholmIssueOne.zip)
When In Ravenholm Issue Two (http://machinima.starfoxweb.com/wir/WhenInRavenholmIssueOne.zip)

My current video project ("current" translated as, last updated in March), sadly needs the voice-work to be redone before I can release it upon the world. Given my current schedule, as well as the schedule of those involved, I cannot give a definitive date, but will just post when it is done. :computerfix:

Meanwhile, in the interest of being productive, I am pleased to release the first pages of my new Gary's Mod webcomic, "When In Ravenholm". Since project is very experimental for me, and with webcomics being the monsters they are, I will post future pages as developed until I complete the planned story, or until shame forces me to kill the characters in a bloody zombie-brain-fest. I would also like to note that I do not consider this a humor webcomic (since I don't think I'm that funny that often,) but more of an experiment in machinima, writing, and serial storytelling. With bad jokes.

So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, When In Ravenholm.

It's a well-known fact that video games and comics provide the human body with essential nutrients when access to food and water is limited. There are days where I find myself transforming into a living example of this medical oddity. And so I carry on the duty of supporting others with the next comic:

Well, okay, as special as a plot advancement can be with only four panels. ;)

That's what I get for working on a story set at night with an LCD screen. :)

I did a quick fix of the last page. How's that look?

EDIT -- Now that you've got my mind on it, I've gone back and redone the panel outline for each page, and brightened most of them in the process. Anybody else having with a problem with the lighting at this point?

And WIR turns 20!

So tell me what you guys think of this: after roughly 5 more pages, I'll have finished the first chunk of the story. I thought it might be fun to take all the pages and compile them into a PDF-book format for anyone wanting to read the whole thing from start to finish. This pdf would be "When In Ravenholm: Issue One", and then further story arcs can be numbered sequentially after that.

And to sweeten the pot, why not toss in some extras? I'm considering making some bonus strips or LOLSources, and I'm open to other suggestions as well. In fact, I'd be more than willing to open it up to submissions from Forums members. For example, if we have willing participants of the artistic variety, I'd be happy to include zombie/HL2 themed artwork. Or, if we wanted to be more "literary", perhaps an introduction from one of our resident review writers. Then Starfox could put a download link up as a Foxhole collaborative piece.

But these are only my personal musings. What do YOU think?

LB -- first, congratulations on delivering a clever, witty drama that has only increased in intelligence as the series has progressed (i.e. the first few were not as good, but the last ones have been spot-on awesome!  :onethumb: )

That said, I like your ideas to develop a WIR PDF for download to Foxhole visitors. I'm not artistic in the visual sense, but I could be prodded to add something of the literary variety if desired. Let's see what others suggest!

Thanks bobdog! It's like I've always said, wit and intelligence is best measured in headcrabs. Prepare to be prodded once I have some time to outline what I'd want you prodded for.

Alright bobdog, if you're still up for contributing, I would be happy to have some writing. What do you think of this idea:

Many popular comic magazines used to include a short prose story at the end of the main story to add some backstory to what had just been read. A good example is the original issues of Watchmen, which contained fictional book excerpts and magazine articles to give some depth to what you'd just read. (If anyone hasn't read Watchmen and wants to see an example, here's a copy of the first issue of Watchmen from the DC Comics website http://www.dccomics.com/media/excerpts/1462_1.pdf (http://www.dccomics.com/media/excerpts/1462_1.pdf).) What I think we could do is include something similar, like for example, a 1-2 page Diary of a Resistance member, or anything else that would apply to the HL2/Ravenholm/WIR backstory.

If you like the idea, let me know. Of course, if you're leaning more in the direction of a review-ish piece, a quick intro might be good too. I'm not picky. :smoking:

I like the diary idea, and I think we could get a lot of our "artists" here to contribute their own thoughts -- Lord knows there's enough crazy here to do some funny stuff!!
Title: Re: When In Ravenholm
Post by: OrlopRat on March 04, 2009, 10:56:03 AM
I don't know....my experience in visual humor is spotty.

When I was in college back in the  70's I drew a comic called "Mel and Ned", which followed the adventures of two fellows, one of whom was a hulking dimwit wearing an overcoat and no pants (Mel), and the other being a run down old sailor-looking type person (Ned).
One day, while engaged in a tastefully depicted act of self gratification Ned reaches for the wrong jar and winds up physically addicted to Vick's Vapo Rub. His addiction becomes so intense that it causes the shutdown of the factory making the stuff, and the rest of the story involves the duo's desperate hunt for more of the product, a journey that eventually takes them to Mars where they battle nazis.

Copies of this thing still exist, despite my best efforts.

I am working on an Oblivion comic at the moment, somewhat hampered by the fact that there's no equivalent of Garry's Mod for the ES games, and the fact that I'm a lazy sod with a particular inability to focus on anything for more than five minutes.

But if I could be of any help.... (http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t67/OrlopRat/Smilies/scared002.gif)

  Hey look! A penguin! ->   (http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t67/OrlopRat/Smilies/prnguin2.gif)
Title: Re: When In Ravenholm

It's a penguin! Get him!

And personally, I'd love to read Mel and Ned. I have a theory that all great works made since the 20th century somehow include Nazis in their work and will be recognized by history and the majority of human society (with the possible exception of Germany). This applies regardless of the quality of the work. You can find examples of these in many popular films (X-Men, Hellboy), video games (Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty), plays (The Diary of Anne Frank) and countless novels, comics, tv specials, and so on.

You want proof? Indiana Jones. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Last Crusade"? Instant classics. "Temple of Doom" and "Crystal Skull"? Meh. Good effort, though. I am therefore resigned to the fact that WIR will never be placed among the greats of webcomics, while Mel and Ned will live forever. Thank you, Orlop, for your lasting contribution to humanity.

And next!

Thank you all for your feedback and support over the past 24 strips. :turnhappy: I've already started work on the pdf edition, including retouching the lighting on the high-res versions of the early pages. I'll also be making a couple of bonus strips sometime soon.

Hey Orlop, what if you made a fake advertisement? Something that could go fill in sections inbetween the main story and the extras. I'll leave the inspiration to you, my only restriction would be to use Letter-sized proportions (8.5 x 11) since that's the format everything else would be in.

Good work indeed :onethumb: Well, except for that odd yellow page in the beginning, but nothing's perfect.(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t67/OrlopRat/Smilies/heee.gif)

The .pdf format works great for this, it was nice reading the whole thing through at once, better flow and whatnot. And the extras were very amusing. I really enjoyed the new strips, and Silver's story was a happily disturbing read.

In the words of the ever annoying orphan Oliver Twist *, "More please?"

Thanks everyone for your kind words and feedback on the first issue! The responses I've been getting on the series on the whole are strongly positive, and I am very glad that so many people are enjoying my little fiddlings with Garry's Mod. I recently put WIR up on Facepunch (http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=709625) (the official Garry's Mod forums). Due to the popular nature of Garry's Mod, Facepunch has roughly 2000 people online any given nanosecond, so naturally I've gained a fair range of interesting criticisms, ranging from the positive/constructive to the "What the hell?"

I'm knind of wondering about that "PENOR CANNON," myself. Unless...oh, no. It seems too horrible to even consider, but...does he mean "Pegnoir" Cannon??

...years after the war...

[A legless vet in a wheelchair berates a youngster] Oh, you think it was all fun and games out there, you little whippersnapper? There was lingerie flyin' everywhere! We were dodging panties, cone bras, speedos...you name it, and it was flung at us. Then the bastards brought out the Pegnoir Cannon...it seemed like we didn't have a chance at that point. They started chanting: "Panties...panties...panties.. ." it was a nightmare, kid. Then they begain raining hellsilk down upon us. I saw a buddy take rhinestone-studded pasties to the face, sheared his head clean off. I myself stepped on a thong and blew my legs off at the knees. The last thing I remember before I blacked out was seeing Sgt. Frock, bless his manly tighty-whities, rush the Cannon and stuff a pair of rigged boxers down the throat of that thing, jamming it. It exploded, and he disappeared from the waist up. I was sure I'd be seein' him in a few minutes and then everything went black. I woke up in a hospital three days later. They said I was lucky to be alive. "Lucky" they said. Sure. *They* don't have to live with the nightmares. *They* don't wake up screaming. Lucky. Ha! Sure, kid...we won the battle. But whenever I see a woman in her knickers, I wished I had died out there. That's why I always go commando...hey, where you goin'? Little bastard. What? Oh, hi officers. Nossir, I wasn't showing my John Thomas to a teenage boy, I was showin' him proof that...hey...HEY! Leggo! I'm a vet'ran! Can't you...rrrrrrrrghhh...zzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzttt!...taktaktaktak...

...and peace reigned in the park once more.

A bit of delay between strips, meaning that Tom has been sitting here for quite some time. If it helps, just imagine that he and Mandy are talking very slowly.

Hmmm..... perhaps this already been explored, but it makes a lot of sense if Gordon was mute. As in clinically mute. It would explain not only why he never speaks, but also why everyone is so polite about the fact that he hasn't said a word to anyone for roughly 20 years.

I'd planned from the start of the series to introduce Grigori as a secondary character, although it was originally going to be done in a very different way involving a pre-mentalbreakdown/pre-spiritually-enlightened figure that the characters find injured on the road who would eventually undergo many mental changes, due in part to a lack of oxygen in the brain. But that was back when I had pretensions that I was doing a "serious" comic, and might have had a problem reducing him to an Elmer Fudd-like character.

I like this much better. :smoking:

Two updates!

First update, strip 40!

Second update:

In ten more strips, we'll be at page 50, which will conclude Issue Two. Then I'll be pulling together the next pdf, fixing up the new cover, making some bonus strips, and collecting any extra content the Foxhole feels like making! Whether it's advertisements, sketches, short stories, or whatever else you can fit into a 8.5x11 page, I'd like to make Issue Two just as exciting as the first. If you have any suggestions, feel free to PM me or use this space!

Point of interest: Within two months since its release, Issue One has been downloaded 231 times! Woot! :turnhappy:

This one took a bit longer then I expected it to, but here it finally is. I'm hoping to churn out another one this weekend that'll be a bit more straightforward then my idea for this one originally was.

I've also come to the conclusion that it's kind of interesting to create the comic with the enemy NPCs enabled. Then I can imagine that it's a very high-risk film shoot. You never know how dramatic filming becomes when not only is the lead actor throwing a tiff, but fast zombies smash in through the windows and assault the cameraman.

RIP Craig - 2008-2009

I think making this comic gave me a headache. Owww...... :P

Anyway. Three strips left for this issue! With a little luck I'll be able to whip those up over the next week or so, provided my other  work doesn't hold me back.

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN!!

I hope everyone here has enjoyed Issue Two as much as I've enjoyed making it (minus the eye-burning pain I felt trying to churn out strips when my muse was using her sick days). I will now move on to generating some extras and fine-tuning the current pages for the new pdf.

Once the pdf is finished, I will be taking a brief haitus from WIR to work on a couple of other projects that require some loving attention. Once those are more or less out of the way, I'll be coming back for a final issue to wrap up the series and firmly cement my position among Half-Life fans with delusions of creativity and storytelling. I hope you'll join me for it. :turnhappy:

When I updated my site, the directories for all of the original WIR strips was changed, causing them to disappear from this thread. I've updated the links to the copies on Photobucket, saving the time and energy of resizing the higher resolution ones again. I also updated the links to the collected versions. The only images still out of date are the cover images and the NUKLEAR EXPLOSION strip.

For convienience, here are those PDF links:

http://machinima.starfoxweb.com/wir/WhenInRavenholmIssueOne.zip (http://machinima.starfoxweb.com/wir/WhenInRavenholmIssueOne.zip)
http://machinima.starfoxweb.com/wir/WhenInRavenholmIssueTwo.zip (http://machinima.starfoxweb.com/wir/WhenInRavenholmIssueTwo.zip)

Perhaps you think it odd that I would make these updates in an aging thread, as though I wanted to make the long-derelict series readable from the beginning again. But for what reason would I want to do that?

::)

That is all.
