The Dark Mod beta Released
« on: October 19, 2009, 08:45:51 AM »
That's right. After 5 years of development, Broken Glass Studio and The Dark Mod team have released the public beta of their total conversion of the Doom 3 engine to adapt it to the tough requirements of a stealthy gameplay based on the steampunk universe of Thief. Until now the public had to play alpha versions of The Dark Mod, the latest being already of beta quality in my opinion so I expect this beta release to be nothing short of the final version.

What is The Dark Mod anyway?

For those who missed our previous news, a little refresher course: The Dark Mod is not a game in itself but a total conversion of the Doom 3 engine that allow other mod authors to develop new Fan Missions or even complete campaigns. on it. Right now, there are 4 missions available including one that is already included when you install The Dark Mod and which is a training mission featuring several areas when you can learn specific aspects of the novelties introduced by The Dark Mod or even stealth gameplay itself (for those who never played Thief nor any other game like it).

For now I just had time myself to run through a few areas of the training mission, discovering for the first time the new lockpicking mechanism (a little tricky at first but interesting enough). I'll have probably more to say about this beta release in a while.

For now why don't you go an try out for yourself. What you need is a copy of Doom 3 patched to the latest version (1.3.1304) and of course the download link for The Dark Mod itself that you'll find on this page.
