Thief 2 and nVidia Drivers
« on: February 14, 2008, 07:27:44 AM »
As mentioned in a post in the Technical column, I was pondering significantly upgrading my Nvidia drivers to play a new game which required v143.xx or above. From what I've read and understand on the various Thief fora, only Nvidia v93.xx and lower supported Thief 2, which is why I've kept them at that point rather than upgrading.

Well, I bit the bullet and installed the current v169.21. And then for scientific curiosity, I booted up both Thief 2 vanilla and DarkLoader with a mission ... AND ... I was able to play both!! That was last night, so to further back my theory, I turned the computer off overnight and after booting up this morning, tried both again, and voila! They still work!

I don't know if I have a miracle machine blessed by the patron saint of The City, but I will certainly take this ball of luck! Here's my system stats: AMD 3200, 2GB RAM, Windows XP SP2, Nvidia 7600 GS

So, If anyone else has ventured into these waters, let us know whether the latest Nvidia driver work for your Thief 2!

I don't think I'm running the absolute LATEST Nvidia driver -- I know, shame on me -- but T2 works perfectly well for me on more recent drivers. It was  like a miracle in a way, like the Three Stooges walking on water.

Of course, T1 doesn't run for me at all, at least not as of the last several driver updates. I despair, but in a relatively minor way.
An interview with Kim Kardashian? Who wants to see that? I'd rather see an interview with the mortician's assistant who had to piece her head back together so they could have an open-casket funeral.
